It's never too late (or early!) to teach your children the danger of rivers, especially after a storm. This week, my Dad's uncle fell into the Little Miami while trying to trim some trees that had fallen after a horrible storm, and was just found yesterday. He was 87.

He had lived near that river for many, many years and had to have known how unsafe it was at the time. The currents don't seem bad, the speed doesn't seem fast, but it is and it could get a grasp on you in a second and within minutes you will be dead. At the same time my great uncle fell into the water, across the river a teenager jumped in, ON PURPOSE, to swim. He thought it would be fun. He eventually made it to shore and is just fine, but what a stupid stunt to pull, especially when another man drowned near that same spot at that same time. Even at 15 that kid should have known better. I'm all for swimming and water safety, but it doesn't end where chlorinated pools do....there's even more to learn about rivers.

So sorry to hear the news! That is terrible!
I'm so sorry to hear that.
You are right though - we have lots of drownings here in Lake Michigan too.
